The following questions were posed to the three NHC School Board Members with their responses.
1. What are your responsibilities?
A: We hire and fire the superintendent.
A: We create and enforce school policy
-policy can come senior county staff, individual board members, or recommendations form individual school personnel.
A: The board approves policy.
A: Members serve all schools and are responsible for the county system as well as individual schools.
A: Biggest current need is revisiting the "strategic planning process." Bring schools closer together with their individual goals.
2. What is your thoughts on redistricting?
A: Members present hope for a 50/50 socio-economic ration in all schools for the 2010-2011 school year.
A: Vote on redistricting is January 14, 2010.
A: Members suggested that teachers voice their opinions at future school board meetings.
3. Discuss your thoughts on ratios between teachers and students.
A: Members thought a recent conversation with the superintendent mentioned that this ratio only includes teachers who teach students in their classrooms all day, excluding media specialists, CRTS, and counselors.
A: This was questioned by those attending and other board members said they will review this matter with the superintendent.
A: Members will be proposing to restore after school busing.
A: Members suggested that teachers voice their opinions at future school board meetings.
4. Discuss your thoughts on Open Choice.
A: PLT group voiced opinion that open choice will hurt schools (students will leave school A under populated, while moving to school B and creating over population.
A: Members said there has not been any discussion of this matter at recent board meetings.
A: Member said they are interested in knowing the needs of individual schools (via principals) regardless of monies available.
A: Members suggested that teachers contact school representatives who participate in the school board's action team meetings as well as attend these meetings. Meeting times and dates can be found on the website.
